SHARE began as a ministry of First Christian Church of Midland, Texas, in 2005 when a member of the congregation, who was a special education teacher, recognized that there were a number of of church members who had children with special needs and who he believed could benefit from a short respite from caretaking duties of all the children in the household.
Parents in the church were invited to bring all their children to the church on a Friday evening where volunteers gathered to care for not only the child with special needs, but his/her siblings as well.
SHARE became known in the community of families who have children with all sorts of special needs and, in a few short years, the program has grown to offering respite twice monthly.
In 2008, SHARE took a bold step away from being a church ministry to becoming its own nonprofit organization. By taking this action, the program opened up to families all across West Texas who requested an evening of respite.
